Can you get “free” point to point wireless communications? We’ve been told that the amount of data you want to send, plus how quickly you want it sent, is where the cost factor sits. That is true because you are paying a carrier for the service or subscription, just like the pony express. The topic has a bit more meat on the bone than that though. It is worth digging a little deeper into terms like “mesh networking” and low power networks.
You can absolutely move data wirelessly without paying a carrier, but then you’ll be the one balancing range, bandwidth, power consumption, legal hurdles, plus security features. Open broadcasting is one thing. Secure device to device encryption is another. Each constraint introduces new wrinkles, but if you can work within the weave, you can send the data.
Let’s take a look at LoRa and LoraWAN networking. LoRa is point-to-point by default. LoRaWAN adds a network/server structure, but isn’t necessary for direct device-to-device communication. It is free to operate, has a range of 2–15 km (urban vs rural). The data rate is low (0.3–50 kbps) but that makes it extremely frugal on power. You can build the network stack on Chirpstack or The Things Network, both of which come with excellent learning resources.
You can try Bluetooth Mesh, it is built for networking. It is free and great for short-range work (~10–100m). It is low power by design and was designed to be a scalable mesh for commercial applications. It’s limited by range, but BLE Mesh can make a flexible small-area network.
If you think it is only “new tech” stuff, you also have WiFi P2P, or that other old reliable, Ham Radio. The amateur radio option, free once you get licensed (most countries have licensing requirements), uses packet radio protocols like AX.25 or digital modes like JS8Call, FT8, Winlink.
Yes, there are free radio pathways. But freedom lives in the constraints—knowing how to build within the noise, the legal limit, and the packet size.
So, what’s the “best” free option?
| Use Case | Best Option |
|---|---|
| Rural sensor networks | LoRa |
| Urban building | Wi-Fi Mesh |
| Commercial spaces, industrial, | BLE Mesh |
| Worldwide nerd comms | Ham Packet Radio |
